Columba Global Systems has developed exprimer, a state-of-the-art,
open-standards based, expressive, database-independent retrieval
and update system.
Data Intensive Industries - The Problem
Certain industries rely heavily on data, particularly customer data.
Examples include the airline, e-Government, security, logistics,
and finance industries. Typically, the data held in these organizations
is spread across multiple, heterogeneous databases. This gives rise
to two problems.
» Firstly, the diversity of data stores makes
it difficult to rapidly and accurately search for and aggregate
information. Often companies have teams of analysts writing reports
to retrieve the information. These cause bottlenecks in corporate
processes and prevent timely access to corporate information.
» Secondly, companies face difficulties integrating
multiple databases with eBusiness systems that can bring the data
to the Internet. Ideally, they would like to allow their eBusiness
applications to retrieve and update data from diverse databases
without exposing any of the data models.
exprimer was primarily designed to solve these problems. It enables
organizations to rapidly and accurately find and persist information
stored in multiple databases and demonstrates a sophisticated, highly
evolved search and retrieval capability for corporate information/knowledge.
exprimer provides retrieval and update engines that abstract the
data models and lets organizations transparently integrate their
corporate databases with modern e-Business systems. It has an intuitive
and easy-to-use client built on expressive principles that lets users
manage the information in their databases in an efficient and effective
manner. It is fully based on open standards: J2EE for the application
server, CORBA for the data gateway, ISO 23950 for data retrieval
and update, XML and XSL for presentation of the data, and SOAP,
UDDI and WSDL for Web Services.
